Private Voice Lessons

We are both voice teachers and voice coaches.  A voice teacher teaches you the technical aspects of how to sing:  how to breathe, how to support your voice, how to get pleasing tone and good resonance, how to sing healthfully and effortlessly, how to bridge your break, etc.  A voice coach helps you interpret your song, find your voice, make songs your own, and improve your performance.  We do either or both, depending on your needs, interests and goals.

Our teaching approach draws on both classical and modern methods.  Different teachers use more or less of different methods according to their experience, education, and preferences.

Among all the voice coaches at Performance High, we work with singers in almost all genres:  pop singers, rock singers, jazz singers, country singers, R&B singers, folk singers, musical theatre singers, classical singers, and on occasion, opera singers (Lafayette location only).  We match the singer with the teacher for the best fit in goals, personality, singing style, and needs.

Yes, we do Skype lessons.  They’re not preferred, but if they’re your best option based on your location, we’re happy to work with you!

Vocal Intensives

Vocal Intensives are approximately 4-8 hours of one-on-one instruction over 1-3 days.  Vocal Intensives are 100% customizable and can include multiple teachers at Performance High. Pricing is a discount off the lowest published hourly rate for the teacher(s) you work with.

If you’d like to do a vocal intensive, contact us to discuss your previous vocal training and what you’d like to get out of a vocal intensive.  We will need to make sure there’s a fit before we commit, so we may ask for a short audition video.

Jill L., lead singer of Seattle band Cover to Cover, talks about her weekend vocal intensive with Adrienne, what she learned, and what kind of singer is a good candidate for a vocal intensive.

What to Expect

  • We will make sure to understand your reasons for taking lessons, and tailor your lessons to reach those goals.
  • We aim for quick results while still helping you develop a solid, healthy foundation.  We don’t want you to get bored and frustrated waiting to see progress, and we don’t expect you to take lessons forever.
  • Your lesson will be recorded and posted online in Dropbox for your reference and practice purposes.  Most students make much faster progress with recorded reference to their lessons.
  • YOU will be safe in the lesson.  Although you will be stretched to try new things, you are always in a “safe zone” with us!
  • YOUR VOICE will be safe with us.  We won’t let you ruin your voice.
  • Lessons will be fun and relaxed, but as efficient as possible.  We value your time.
  • You will sing what you want.  We can help you narrow down song choices for what’s most appropriate for you and your current skill level, but you pick songs you like and want to sing.
  • You can record a demo track, such as you singing over a karaoke track or accompanying yourself, in our studio using the same gear Adrienne recorded two albums on.
  • We can take any track (such as a karaoke track you want to practice to) and quickly transpose it into your key.*
  • We can take any track and slow it down for you, so that you can work on difficult passages or exercises more slowly and then build up in speed.*

“Kristin is an exemplary teacher. Max has been working with her a couple of years and really looks forward to his lessons. Music has become an integral part of his being and identity, thanks to Kristin’s tutelage. Even though she works with professionals, she was able to meet our tween son at his level and make lessons fun and absorbing. That doesn’t mean she doesn’t work him hard or have high expectations. I am impressed with her vast knowledge of subject and how she teaches him specific strategies to use while singing to improve his sound and tonal quality. We are a homeschooling family, so I appreciate her integrating music theory, history and even physics into his lessons. Since he’s started working with her, he’s landed a lead part in a local play and she has provided ongoing support for that sometimes confusing experience. It’s been very helpful for me as a parent to have another ally in raising and guiding him, someone I can talk with about his progress, and I feel she has his best interest at heart, always. It is clear that we have found a lifelong mentor for our son in Kristin, and that makes us grateful. I do heartily recommend her to anyone looking to take their musicality and performance to the next level. Teachers with Kristin’s skill set and personality are rare.“

"I feel like working with Adrienne expanded my horizons. While I was already trained as a vocalist and I sing (background), Adrienne gave me the confidence and knowledge to push into new areas, not just keep working in the same box I had always been in. I've taken lessons with all of the other teachers in my area, but they kept pushing me back into the classical or opera ways of hitting notes. With Adrienne I've learned to expand my range higher and lower with a pop tone that fits the music I do, and the difference has been huge. She helped my combine the new knowledge she was giving me without forgetting everything I knew before. Even the musicians I play with have noticed the difference, I'm singing with much more confidence, I'm doing more ad libs, I'm on top of the songs. That's why I've even organized five other singers to travel to Denver to take lessons with her." - Elizabeth M., worship leader
